[RED WING] Red Wing Irish Setter “9874” Full Sole Custom Vibram #705

[RED WING] Red Wing Irish Setter “9874” Full Sole Custom Vibram #705

4 December 2023

The Irish Setter, a classic Red Wing model.

This 9874 is a reissue of the 8179 from the 1990s.

As for the details seen on the 8179 at that time,

One example is *Cha-shin*.

At the time, for various reasons, brown leather was not dyed black right through to the core,

Leather with only the surface finished in black was used.

The ageing process whereby the black leather gradually turns brown as it is worn is

Captivating many Red Wing fans,

The original models from that era even command a premium.

This 9874 is a reissue of the 8179 from that era.

So that we can still enjoy the ageing of tea leaves from that era today

This pair features our newly developed ‘Klondike’ leather.

In 2012, when the 9874 was released, I was a student at the time, and

I saw this model in a certain magazine and fell in love with her at first sight,

Enquire with Red Wing Japan about authorised retailers

I remember going to Ueno the next day to buy it.

It is not clear whether it is currently out of print or simply sold out, but

Anyway, it’s a model that’s simply impossible to get hold of, so

I’m glad I bought it.

I’ve gone off on a tangent, but now we’ll get to the main point.

This time, the item was brought in for sole repairs.

It comes with an original traction tread sole, but

The pattern on the front tyre is worn down, and

The pattern has completely faded from the sides.

Significant wear was also evident on the heel.

I completely understand how you just can’t help but wear them all the time.

I’d particularly like my brown-core shoes to develop a brown patina quickly.

I wear them with that feeling in full swing, so I end up wearing them far too often,

It’s not uncommon for the time to have a repair come round before you know it.

It was well worth wearing them so hard

The upper is showing some lovely signs of ageing.

And then, by having us maintain the well-worn soles,

I can wear them hard again, and they look set to age even better.

Given that it is generally worn down this time,

We’ve decided to carry out a full resole.

And, as the owner thought it would be a shame not to,

We have customised it with a different sole.

Here is the finished result.

Vibram #705

The sole used was the Vibram #705.

This is a classic sole for work boots.

The design is the same as that of the Vibram #700,

featuring a chevron pattern

It boasts excellent durability and grip.

It’s a bit like a half sole for the Vibram #700.

To prevent the thick rubber from peeling off

In addition to the outseam, in the centre of the sole

I’m stitching this, but doesn’t it start to look like something?

When I first joined the company, a senior colleague asked me a similar question, and

I overthought it and couldn’t come up with an answer, but…

At our company, we use this stitch to

‘Fish Stitch’

...is what we call it.

I’ve reached the point where I can’t think of any other name apart from ‘Fish Stitch’

I reckon it’s started to look like nothing but a fish, hasn’t it? Haha

A cover heel is used on the toe cap.

To match the rubber on the front

It looks as though it would fit even with a Vibram #700 heel.

The side view also gives it a completely different look.

The front section features a leather sole and Vibram #705,

For a voluminous finish.

The heel section, too, complements the voluminous front section and

I’ve finished it in such a way as to achieve a sense of balance.

Also, the shape of the heel is not straight, but

Featuring a pitched heel design to cinch in the waist.

It gives the heel area a neat and tidy look.

It exudes a rugged yet somehow elegant air

I think this has turned out to be the best customisation, hasn’t it?

This time, starting with the original traction tread sole...

We have carried out a full resole on the Vibram #705.

The atmosphere has changed quite a bit, and I’m feeling refreshed.

It looks as though I’ll be able to start wearing them.
