{"id":23274,"date":"2019-07-29T00:00:40","date_gmt":"2019-07-28T15:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8066\/cp-bin\/tool\/news\/information\/guidi-%e3%81%ae%e3%83%95%e3%82%a1%e3%82%b9%e3%83%8a%e3%83%bc%e4%ba%a4%e6%8f%9b"},"modified":"2019-07-29T00:00:40","modified_gmt":"2019-07-28T15:00:40","slug":"replacing-the-zip-on-a-guidi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.union-works.co.jp\/en\/blog\/mens-repair\/guidi-carpe-diem\/23274\/","title":{"rendered":"Replacing the zip on a GUIDI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#160;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8599.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8599.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>GUID<\/strong>I\u2019s classic back-zip boots\u2606<\/p>\n<p>With their distinctive creases running from the instep to the ankle, these are the quintessential boots from an artisan brand, aren\u2019t they? \u2606<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8604.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8604.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>The zip on my left leg is torn, and the one on the right looks as though it\u2019s about to tear as well.<\/p>\n<p>As tears in the tape cannot be repaired, the entire zip will need to be replaced.<\/p>\n<p>At this time of year, GUIDI products tend to be less durable and more prone to tearing, as the tape on the zips is made of cotton.<\/p>\n<p>GUIDI uses a rather specialised dyeing method known as \u2018tumbler dyeing\u2019, in which finished shoes are dyed whole in a tumbler (dye vat).<\/p>\n<p>A key feature is that the entire item, right down to the threads and the inside, is dyed; I imagine the zip tape is made of cotton rather than nylon because the latter doesn\u2019t take the dye very well.<\/p>\n<p>The cotton tape had a nice, distinctive look, but it seems that some of GUIDI\u2019s recent models now feature zips with pre-coloured nylon tape.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a tough choice between strength and atmosphere, isn\u2019t it? \u2605\u2605\u2605<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8607.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8607.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>The zip pull is a GUIDI original \u2013 it looks brilliant!<\/p>\n<p>The slider seems to be working fine, so I\u2019ll just carry it over and use it as it is this time\u2606<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8608.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8608.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>First, carefully unpick the stitches one by one to remove the zip, taking care not to damage the leather.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8612.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8612.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve removed the original zip, get a new one ready; cut the zip you\u2019ve bought by the metre to the right length.<\/p>\n<p>YKK\u2019s premium \u2018Excela Zip\u2019 range is identical to the original zip, apart from the fact that the tape is made of nylon\u2606<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8613.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8613.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>GUIDI zips are of the type with top and bottom stops; remove the elements (teeth) one by one by cutting through them.<\/p>\n<p>This is where the length of the zip is finalised \u2013 be careful, as if you take out too many elements, it will end up being too short and you\u2019ll have to start all over again!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8617.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8617.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"162\" \/>&#160;<\/p>\n<p>The two on the left are top fastenings and the X-shaped one on the right is a bottom fastening; these are the same parts as the GUIDI ones too\u2606<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8622.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8622.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once you have fitted all the elements, simply attach the bottom fastener.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8623.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8623.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is where the work that is unique to GUIDI begins: dyeing the tape.<\/p>\n<p>I mix the dyes to create a subtle, greenish shade.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8626.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8626.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8627.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8627.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once the dye is ready, apply it to the tape to colour it.<\/p>\n<p>The one placed on top on the left (above) is the original zip \u2013 it\u2019s now almost exactly the same colour\u2606<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8629.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8629.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve dyed it, thread the slider through and attach the top stopper \u2013 and there you have it, your new zip is complete! \u2606<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8633.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8633.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8635.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8635.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Stick the tab onto the tape section of the zip.<\/p>\n<p>The pull tab is a leather piece attached so that the zip does not come into direct contact with your foot.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8637.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8637.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Temporarily secure the zip and upper with glue.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8641.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8641.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For the first pass on the sewing machine (the inner seam), sew the upper and the zip (including the pull tab) whilst leaving the lining unsewn.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8643.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8643.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once you have finished sewing, attach the lining.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8647.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8647.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sew through the lining as well on the second pass (the outer line), and it\u2019s finished\u2606<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8659.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8659.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8663.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8663.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/fc2\/blog-imgs-128.fc2.com\/u\/n\/i\/unionworks\/IMG_8667.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8667.jpg\" border=\"0\" width=\"448\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve managed to reproduce the colour of the tape almost perfectly;
