[batak] Town Classic Coat

[batak] Town Classic Coat

9 October 2026

I’ve received the bespoke coat from batak.

What we have prepared this time is something we launched once before, three years ago

[Town Classic Coat] Grey Herringbone

The inspiration for the design came from the film *Phantom Thread*.

Set in 1950s London, this piece is inspired by the coat worn by the haute couture tailor Reynolds Woodcock in the film.

Whilst the story is certainly a highlight, this is a production that is a delight to watch simply for the way the classic British attire is styled and tailored.

If you haven’t seen it yet, do give it a watch.

The design is,

Notched lapel with raglan sleeves

Large patch and flap pockets.

And then, the turn-up cuff.

It is characterised by details that convey a sense of relaxed, sophisticated poise.

Its classic appearance is complemented by a pleasantly relaxed atmosphere.

It is this exquisite balance that makes this coat so appealing.

And on this occasion, what I’d particularly like you to take a look at is the fabric.

The fabric used is herringbone tweed, woven in Japan from British wool.

At first glance, it appears to be a standard herringbone pattern, but on closer inspection, you can see that it is interspersed here and there with whitish, stiff hairs.

This is known as ‘kenpi’, the thick, coarse hairs found within the wool.

Whilst this was once a relatively common feature in Harris Tweed and similar fabrics, now that uniform, well-structured fabrics have become the norm, tweeds with this sort of texture have become considerably rarer.

The fabric used here has been recreated in Japan, based on archives of that vintage tweed.

By deliberately leaving the slubs in place, a slightly rough, dry-like texture is created, along with the deep, rich appearance characteristic of traditional tweed.

It’s precisely because it’s a bit uneven that it looks so cool.

If you’re a fan of vintage tweed, this fabric is sure to appeal to you.

It weighs approximately 500g.

It has the distinctive presence of tweed, yet is a very versatile weight—not too heavy—making it ideal for coats.

It’s very practical for a Kanto winter, and I think it’s just the right choice as a winter coat to wear over a jacket or jumper.

Whilst these fabrics do not bear the names of so-called famous fabric brands, what we prioritised this time was not the brand name, but the character and quality of the fabric itself.

Fabric, tailoring, design.

Taking all of these factors into account, it has turned out to be a truly attractive garment.

Finally, here are a few photos showing how it looks when worn.

177 cm / Wearing size 40

A relaxed silhouette created using plenty of fabric.

There is plenty of room around the shoulders, making it more comfortable to wear than it looks.

Worn over a jacket or suit, it creates a classic look.

Worn over knits, denim or chinos, it creates a relaxed look.

As it works equally well for both smart and casual looks, I think this is the sort of coat you’ll naturally reach for as a staple of your winter wardrobe.

Personally, I’d also recommend wearing it with the collar turned up.
The look changes slightly, allowing you to enjoy a more quintessentially British atmosphere.
